The French subtitle translation of Thoughts Become Things came about through an unexpected opportunity. Late in 2025, the team was contacted by a film festival based on an island off the coast of France. It was an invitation that, while missed due to timing, opened the door to a new chapter in the film’s international journey. With the possibility of a 2026 submission on the horizon, the team moved quickly to ensure the film would be ready to speak to French-speaking audiences.
To make that happen, they turned to Dino, a native Parisian now living in Bermuda and a friend of writer and executive producer Stephan Johnstone. His dual connection to both French culture and Bermudian life made him uniquely suited for this work. Much like the Spanish translation, which benefited from translators who understood both worlds, Dino’s insight meant the process was rooted in genuine cultural understanding rather than a purely linguistic exercise.
The translation required careful thought. The film’s poetry, rhythm, and Bermudian references needed to be carried across into French in a way that felt natural without losing their meaning. Some phrasing shifts in the French version, as it does in the Japanese, but the essence of the story, ancestry, identity, and the power of thought, remains fully intact.
This translation represents the film’s reach into the French-speaking world, a step taken not just for festival consideration, but as an affirmation that Bermudian storytelling belongs in every language.
Translation note:
The English text below is a direct interpretation of the French subtitles, not a word-for-word translation. Some phrasing shifts to preserve meaning, rhythm, and emotional intent across languages, reflecting how poetry evolves while its spirit remains intact.

Gombey : Un message ancestral
Tu ne m’attraperas pas
You won’t catch me
Même si tu es de la police,
Even if you were the police
Jamais!
Never!
Allez, c’est l’heure d’aller se coucher
Come on, let’s get ready for bed.
Tu es comme ton père, demain
You know, you’re just like your father, tomorrow
Tout ira bien, tous tes amis seront là.
Everything is going to be okay all your friends will be there
Je serai là, et tes ancêtres seront là pour veiller sur toi pour toujours.
I will be there, and your ancestors will be there to watch over you forever
Comme la pluie qui tombe, le rythme des Gombeys ne cesse de battre dans nos cœurs.
Like the rain that falls, the rhythm of the Gombeys never stops beating in our hearts
Les Gombeys sont le cri du cœur et de l’âme
The Gombeys are the cry of the heart and soul
Un rythme implacable comme un coup de hachette sur la tête, une pulsation infinie
A relentless rhythm like a hatchet hits your head in an infinite pulse
Et la flèche de votre sagesse ancestrale nous guidera vers le futur
And the arrow of your ancestral wisdom will guide us in the future
Ainsi, leurs esprits s’étendront sur les prochaines générations
Therefore their spirit will live on in the next generation
Ils nous apprendront à construire et établir nos fondations.
They will teach us to build and to lay down our foundations
Avec notre volonté, nos pensées deviendront réelles
With our will, our thoughts will become real
Enseignez-nous afin de nous garantir la réussite.
Teach us in order to guarantee us success
Vos mots seront nos ailes, qui nous offriront la liberté
Your words will become our wings that will give us freedom
Nous permettant de ne jamais nous arrêter.
Allowing us to never stop
Pour toujours
Forever
Comme la pluie qui tombe, le rythme des Gombeys ne cesse de battre dans nos cœurs.
Just like the rain that falls, the rhythm of the Gombeys never stops beating in our hearts!
